Starting your first legal internship or working in a new professional capacity can be exciting, but at the same time, as a woman particularly, it can bring on a lot of stress about how you make your first impressions from what you wear to how you style your hair. You may also just be thinking about how you can create variety in styling yourself while looking professional. I have long hair which in theory means I can style it in a lot of different ways however I needed some ideas of professional hair styles I could wear to the office when I started my first law school graduate internship in Melbourne and I remember searching for hairstyles myself. I did not want to stick to boring hair down or hair in a pony tail every day,  and so I have developed a few go to styles. Let me share with you some of my favourite go-to hairstyles and hair accessories that I use for the office, court and work events that worked for me from intern to lawyer over the years:

Top hair bun using a hair donut:

I like having my hair out of the way and sometimes a high bun makes me feel motivated and boss-like, so I think of it as my getting it done top bun. I also sometimes have my hair in a bun but slightly lower and it gives me a look that I think looks elegant from the office or court to after-work parties. You can decide how high you want to wear this bun.

You will need:

  • 2 hair ties
  • a hair donut (with really long almost waist length hair, a Large or XL netted hair donut really helps)
  • bobby pins
  • Optional: mini elastics

Some pharmacies and general stores will sell hair donut sets, however here are some Amazon linked pictures to some large hair donuts for your convenience:

Instructions for Donut Hair bun:

  1. Tie your hair in a pony tail as high as you want your bun to be.

2. Pull your ponytail through the hair donut.

3. Take the hair from the ponytail and spread it over the donut hair bun. Take another regular hair elastic and use it to secure the hair wrapped around the bun.

4. & 5. Now with the rest of the hair left outside, you’re going to split the hair into 2 and braid each.

6. Take one of the braids and wrap it around the bun and see if you can secure the end under the last elastic around the hair donut.

7. Wrap the 2nd braid now around and also try to see if you can find a spot under the hair elastic to secure.

8. You can use extra bobby pins to make sure your braids are securely attached to your hair bun.

Claw Clip styles:

Claw clips have become my recent easy go-to. It’s so easy to put your hair up with a claw clip especially when you get really good sturdy claw clips like from Godess and Tonirose.co, 2 of my favourite Canadian brands currently. These so far have been the best claw clips I’ve used for long thick hair.

Godess has these beautiful and elegant signature loop claw clips that are not only elegant but have very strong sturdy clasps and springs so you also don’t have to worry about these claw clips falling out or breaking easy like generic plastic claw clips on amazon and other stores. Godess has several videos on their website and instagram for different ideas on how to wear their claw clips.

Godess also has these beautiful butterfly clips for more casual days in the office or outside of the office. These Godess clips all have very sturdy and strong clasps, so it’s surprising how well even these small clips can hold thick hair.

I have also bought a lot of accessories from Tonirose.co (I am not an affiliate for Tonirose.co). I love the XL claw clips from Tonirose.co because they are actually XL and hold my waist length hair all day long. You can get a variety of colours, I’ve gotten ivory white, navy blue and brown clips. There a lot of hair tutorials by Tonirose.co on tiktok and youtube for her hair accessories.

One of my favourite ways to put up my hair with XL claw clips has been to do a French hair twist, so it captures the majority of my hair with a little bit of optional hair poof volume at the top and it really gets all of the hair I want out of my way. Tonirose.co also has hair forks you can use to keep your hair up in a French twist as well for another look.
