Time and time again, I have been asked what is the secret. How do you study for these exams? Like many of you, you probably wanted to pass the Ontario Bar Exams the first time around, and perhaps something came up that caused you to take a step back or fear you wouldn’t be able to. I had told this story before in one of my first blog posts about how I pressured myself to get through both bar exams in the first June sitting, however, due to some inclement weather, I had a concussion and felt the doom of not being prepared for the bar exams. I postponed them and wrote the solicitors exam in November, and then the barristers exam in March while completing the LPP and I passed them both the first time around.

If you want to know more about my own personal experience with the Bar Exams, you can read my blog post: My Ontario Bar Exam Experience as a Lawyer Licensing Candidate

With another eager friend, we signed up with a tutor that she found out about on Facebook to go over the solicitor materials in the summer. This was not one-on-one tutoring but a set of classes with a few students and it cost each of us over $1000. 1 student I met had taken the exam more than once before and enrolled hoping to get help with passing it the next time around. The tutor was good with providing a summary of each of the chapters and ensuring we understood the content. In the end, I passed and some did, and some classmates did not. I remember getting a message from one student later begging me to privately tutor him. It was his dream to become a lawyer in Ontario, and he told me that he just got approval to write it for the 4th time! He has used LSO tutors, and videos, and has paid $1000s to similar private tutors for classes and he was begging me to tutor him. I felt that I didn’t have the time as I was focused on my own career path and starting my legal placement soon…

One thing I can remember was that he had told the tutor he had failed previously after reading the materials twice and the tutor told him to read it 3 or 4 times as a recommendation. Oh my goodness, this is also the advice and recommendation on the LSO website, that says you should read the materials at least 3 times over. Oh boy, I read the solicitor materials, some sections maybe more than once, but overall mostly just once and the barrister materials, completely only once. In my opinion, you DO NOT need to torture yourself doing this! The materials themselves can be overwhelming to get through even once, let alone pushing yourself to ensure you’ve read it 3+ times. I believe you should read the materials but I do not think that simply re-reading it over and over again will particularly improve your chances of passing the bar exams. WHY?

Why simply reading and re-reading the materials won’t result in you passing the Ontario Bar Exams?

Simply reading the materials won’t help you. A lot of people make this mistake believing that they just need to read the materials and they’ll be able to answer all of the questions or enough questions to pass the bar exams. As a result, there will be candidates that read and re-read over the materials, and then when they fail the bar exams, they believe that they just didn’t read the materials enough or understand the materials and so they’ll turn to a tutor, and the tutor will help them go through the materials, and then they’ll write one of the bar exams again believing they have the confidence to pass because they now understand all of the materials, but then when that result comes back, they can’t understand how they failed again. Why do people make this mistake? If you are one of these people who has failed over and over again and simply believed it was just because you didn’t read the materials enough or understood the materials enough, it is not your fault! Traditionally, a lot of us are taught from elementary school to learn the content, and the test will be on how well we understand the material. This is how we have passed tests and exams before from elementary school, high school and even university. As noted, the law society and tutors have advised based on the law society’s recommendation on their preparation for the bar exams part of their website to read the materials at least 3x! Now this might be helpful for some people, but it does not guarantee you success in passing the bar exams. Why doesn’t this approach work for most? Unless you have a photographic memory, you will not be able to memorize everything. The materials for each exam are about 1000 pages and no one expects you to memorize them, yet the Ontario Bar Exams may ask you to answer very specific questions correctly. For most of us, no matter how many times we re-read the materials, we’re not going to memorize them. You got through law school, so I know your issue likely is not because you didn’t read and understand the materials for the 3rd time over, and possibly after a tutor has gone through it all with you.

If you have been in this boat, what should you do? Rethink your exam study strategy! When you adjust your schedule, plan properly, and look into executing a strategized plan that incorporates not only your reading and understanding of the materials, you will feel confident in tackling the exam. How do you do this and where can you learn more about what to do? Where can you get guidance? Sign up for Ginny’s Ontario Bar Exam Study Guide to get access right away! Another Story: A person I met at a networking event whom I talked to about exam study tips, told me she had never received such advice and that it was the best advice ever! No one ever really discussed practical exam study strategies that really made the most sense, she had only gotten tidbits and was always still confused about how to go about actually studying for the bar exams. So fast-forward to today, I am making this information available to all through this interactive on-demand study guide.

Cost

I know you’re thinking, but I’m still going to have to buy more things, you’re telling me there are still other things to buy and I’m in a penny pinch. I get that, but what’s the cost of re-writing the bar exams? How much money have you invested already into this journey and what would it cost you both monetary-wise and mentally if you continued to fail over and over again? What’s the cost of your time to go through trial and error in figuring out how to study for the Ontario Bar exams and not knowing what the most worthwhile resources to spend your money on? Stop wasting time and let my guide tell you and provide you the ability to make informed decisions on what things you believe you should invest in. I give you the tools to decide how much more you need to buy to prepare for the Ontario bar exams as I understand it can be different for different people based on their circumstances. You will be saving yourself a lot of time and perhaps money as a result. What if you believe you already know the right strategy as you’ve been told by successful bar exam takers, but you’re just feeling alone in this path? Well, this is a guide that’s meant to give you some guidance and then let you take the reigns but make you feel like you have a step-by-step guide to keep you on track and if you have questions, you can always reach out. So what is the cost of having someone who has been there and done it successfully to answer any strategy questions you may be having? I have been told that I am severely undercharging this guided course because everyone else out there who is trying to sell you help to pass the bar exams is charging hundreds to thousands of dollars. Each time you have to re-write the exams, you will have to pay hundreds, you pay more than $1000 a cycle, in addition, to having to re-buy indices possibly or re-edit every page and column, and then you have classes or videos of classes of someone going through the subjects that charge you well over $1000 to have access to or you hire a tutor to have live classes with a smaller group and again that can be another $1000 or more. So what is $65+HST more to boost your chances going to cost you really? I wanted to make this guide affordable for as many people as possible, recognizing that some people may want to spend more for private tutors and coaches to get more live and personal content however, not everyone needs that. A lot of you, particularly law graduates and foreign-trained lawyers have the capability to be self-disciplined and just want a little more guidance and you don’t want to pay a hefty amount for that, and that is what I’m offering.
